Laurent Cantet’s “The Class” (Entre les murs) an evocation of contemporary society as seen through a year’s worth of events in a Paris junior high school won the Palme d’Or of the 61st Cannes Film Festival. It is the first French film to cop the festival’s top prize since “Under the Satan’s Sun” 20 years ago.

So what if there may be an actor’s strike in a few weeks, that is not stopping anyone from securing work. Condense list below:
Richard Dreyfuss is on his way to the White House via Oliver Stone.
Daniel Day-Lewis goes Musical. No not High School Musical.
Highlander is being remade to present time…somewhat.
Dreamworks Americanizes Japanese film Yomigaeri
Jake Gyllenhaal is the Prince of Persia.

I was expecting a great opening weekend for this film, but not this great. Iron Man staring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by John Favreau opened with a little over $100 million dollars domestically and over $96 million internationally , equally an estimated $200 million dollars. Maybe it’s the lack of a good action flick or the warm weather; whatever it was people came out in droves and it shows. Congrats!

…after the birth of her first child.

Halle Berry will star in and produce psychological drama “Frankie and Alice” for indie shingle Access Motion Pictures in association with Reality Pictures in Motion.
Story follows a young woman struggling with multiple personality disorder and torn between who she is and a racist Caucasian alter-personality that preys upon her mind. No production start date has been set.
“Frankie and Alice” is the second independent production for Toronto-based Access Motion Pictures, which recently completed “Phantom Punch,” a Sonny Liston biopic starring Ving Rhames and directed by Robert Townsend.
Film sales company Cinesavvy will handle worldwide sales.

Could there be two Hollywood strikes in one year? Hopefully not. No one could afford that, but things might be headed that way. SAG and AFTRA contracts a up at the start of the summer leaving them to neogitate with AMPTP. Problem is SAG and AFTRA usually go into it together. Well not this time. AFTRA decided to go at it alone. The Screen Actors Guild will begin talks April 15th to be followed by AFTRA two weeks later. If things are not resolved by June 30th, actors could go on strike. This has been known for awhile so movies in production as I type are hoping to wrap filming before the contract end date while praying that a deal is reached before then. You thought the Writer’s Strike was something, imagine if all the actors walk off sets…
